Why You Can’t Have It All, If You Want It All

December 30, 2018 by Camilla

Is trying to have it all causing you to have less than you could?

I’m sure you’ve heard phrases like:

“You can’t have the cake and eat it too.”
“Go big or go home.”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never liked those phrases. I mean, what good is it to have a cake if you can’t eat it? And why can’t you BOTH go big and go home?

I know, the meaning behind them is that you must choose. Either eat the cake or have it. Either go big or go home.

It’s the “either or” concept I’ve never liked.

And that’s how I’ve approached things. Have it all.

But this year that will change and I’ll explain why so that you can take stock of your life and see if trying to have it all right now, is causing you to have a lot less than you could have.

I love to ski. I know people that are hooked to TV-shows the way I love to get my turns in. My days in the winter are usually laid out like this: Work, Ski, Work. Some days it’s more ski than work. Unless it’s a client day.

Sounds great, right?

It is, if you want to run a lifestyle business aka. solopreneur business.

But it’s not great if you’re trying to scale to the next level and build a company with a team.

Skiing breaks my focus. It diverts my thinking. It also takes a lot of time. I’m sure you have similar things that eats up time. Things you enjoy but that are time-consuming.

So this year I’m giving up skiing. I may go a few times, but that’s it.

In order to grow my solopreneur business into a real company with a team and all the jazz that comes with that, I need to work like a CEO of a Fortune 500 company. I need to think like one, show up like one and act like one.

Something has to give. Something has to be edited out in order to find the time, focus and energy necessary to take things to the next level.

We each get 168 hours in a week and for every yes you say, you automatically say no to something else. Key is figuring out what to say yes to and what gets a no.

Ask yourself. What habits, activities, mindsets, or beliefs are you trying to hold onto even though you know they are slowing you down from getting what you really want? And why are you so afraid to give them up, in order to achieve those goals and dreams of yours?

In our modern society we’ve been trained to think that we shouldn’t have to give something up in order to move to the next level or achieve something we want, but that mindset can cause us to move toward our goals like molasses instead of a rushing river.

Think of it this way, when you spread 100% of your time and energy over 10 things each only gets 10% of focus. If you cut that to 5 things you suddenly are able to give each thing twice the focus. Imagine where you could be in a year if you put twice the time, effort and focus on an important goal of yours.

You’d be a whole lot further than if you keep trying to hold onto all the things. Once you achieve your goal you can always add things back in. Short-term sacrifice for long-term gain.

In other words, if you want it all, you may need to sacrifice a few things now, so that eventually you can have it all.

What will you stop doing or edit out in 2019 in order to go to the next level in your life and career?

ps. I’m super-excited to introduce the first public version of the Excel Your Life JournalPlanner. For now it’s available as a PDF download. It’s a journal and planner combination that gives you CLARITY, focus and strategy so you can move forward on your goals. Just going through the questions and worksheets will help you excel to the next level. A physical version will be out fall of 2019 (or sooner if we can).

People Who Achieve Their Goals Do These 6 Things

April 24, 2018 by Camilla

I don’t know what your mission and life goals are, but to me it’s unacceptable that in today’s digital age with so many possibilities and access to information, people, programs, mentors and whatnot, that only 5-10% of people achieve what they say they want to do.

Why is that?

Why do some people achieve their goals while others struggle? And what do they do differently from those who don’t achieve their goals?

Having worked with thousands of people in addition to studying successful people, I’m starting to narrow this thing down. Of course this isn’t a scientific, double-blind, placebo kind of study so keep that in mind. These are just my observations and personal experiences.

People who achieve their goals:

1. Know how they want their life to look like and why.
They spend time asking themselves how they want their life to look like in 3 years, in 5 years, 10 years and even 25 years. Most people only spend time figuring out how they want their vacation to look like, not their life. Knowing the answers to this big question doesn’t just land on your head. It requires you spending time figuring that out.

2. Write down and review their goals.
Writing down goals and reviewing them is key. Many studies show a huge advantage of writing down your goals vs. trying to keep them in your head. The human brain likes to work as little as possible and will forget things that’s not on top of our mind. Hence why reviewing goals even on a weekly basis is key.

3. Figure out how to achieve what they want.
Too many people say they want something but then don’t take action because they may not know how and let that stop them instead of figuring it out. We didn’t know how to go to the moon when that goal was announced but it only took 8 years to figure it out. That was long before the internet, crowdsourcing and looking things up on Google!

4. Are persistent, consistent and don’t give up.
They know that ease and comfort don’ go hand in hand with achieving ANY goals. They know it takes time, hard work and sticking to it. They expect challenges, obstacles and know it’s up to them to make things happen. They also know that things don’t happen overnight and that all those small steps forward adds up.

5. Surround themselves with those that support and can help their vision.
Having the right people supporting you is tremendously helpful. They seek out people, coaches, mentors, masterminds. They limit exposure to those that are negative nancies. They know it takes a network of people to go to their personal moon.

6. They work on their mindset.
They know how important believing in themselves is and how essential the mind, beliefs, habits and self-talk are to success. They make sure to create habits that support their way to success. Henry Ford was spot on when he said: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.”

With the incredible access to information, people and digital support, today there are ZERO excuse to not live the kind of life you want to live. Of course, you do need to know what kind of life you want to live. It all starts there.

What is holding you back from achieving your goals?

5 Tips on How To Plan Your Year

December 5, 2016 by Camilla

How do you plan out your year so that you can accomplish the things you want to accomplish?

In this video I’m showing you how I plan out my year to make sure I accomplish what I set out to do. It’s not as complicated as most think but it does require a little planning and backwards thinking.

Summary. For more detailed information, watch the video.

1. Get a year calendar so that you can have a great visual of the entire year. I use the wall calendar from NeuYear.net. They have some great options including a calendar that you can write and erase on. Helps you move things around if needed without having to use whiteout. I then put in the cornerstones first: vacations, weekend trips, business travel, conferences, training, and seminars. Then I put in marketing campaigns, and deadlines for my projects. I also put in my monthly theme for learning. Always continue your personal growth by studying.

2. Then get a monthly calendar. You can use a bigger desk version or a smaller one. Do what works for you. Now plan out what you must do each day that month in order to make your deadlines or other milestones. Plan backwards so that when that deadline arrives you are ready. If you want to have written a 300 page book by a certain date, how many pages do you need to write every month in order to make that deadline?

3. Then figure out what you must do each week in order to move the needle forward. Having a general plan for the week helps you see what can be done and what can’t. Instead of checking your big wall calendar or monthly calendar, have your weekly goals handy on an index card. I usually write down 5 things to move forward each week on an index card.

4. Then get down to planning your day. What must be done today in order to hit your goals down the road. Remember, you took the entire year, broke down what you needed to do monthly and weekly, now you know what must be done each day. Block time out on your calendar for EVERYTHING, including exercise, education, and yes goofing off time.

5. Get very specific on what projects to move forward this year. Keep it simple. When you try to work on too many things you move few or even none forward. Pick three main projects to move forward and put all your focus on them. Then schedule in time on your calendar when to work on them. What gets scheduled gets done!

I know this seems like a lot. If you’ve never planned much then this may seem overwhelming. Start somewhere. Block out time on your calendar to do certain things. Try to think ahead by planning backwards. Start somewhere and as you go you get better at it and before you know it, you will plan your year out in style!

It’s time to stop spinning and start living, and achieve your goals!

Goals Without Action Equal Zero

January 6, 2016 by Camilla

Having goals is essential to moving forward in life but nothing will happen unless you create an action plan on how to achieve those goals.

How are you going to achieve the goals you set?

What do you need to do, learn, implement, change in order to hit those goals?

How much time do you need to set aside each day, week and month to work on those goals?

We all have the best of intentions. We are going to exercise every day. We are going to eat healthy every day. We are going to write that book, launch that business. We are…we are…but then we don’t do it! Or if we do, it lasts for a week and then we default back to our old habits and wake up a month later only to realize we haven’t done squat!

There are a few reasons for that. Our goals may be overly ambitious and we don’t schedule things in. I mean, if you don’t exercise on a regular basis now what makes you think you can go from couch potato to exercising every day?

In theory it all sounds good. In reality, seldom works. Now, a goal like “I will start parking my car far away from the grocery store and I will schedule in an hour long walk two days a week” will have much greater success rate than the first one.

Small incremental changes lead to giant leaps. For a great visual and more on that read my post Accumulative Effect.

After you have the habit down to walk twice a week you can start adding more. It’s about setting a goal that is achievable but also has impact. Once you start achieving your goals it becomes fun to add more challenging things that stretch you but first you need to get in the habit of taking action and achieving the smaller goals. You don’t go from never having hiked to conquering a 12,000 ft peak.

Goals Without Action Equal Zero

For goals that require you to learn something what is the bare minimum you need to learn in order to get started? I know those that spend years and years accumulating information but never do anything with it. That is a waste of time. It’s not moving you any closer on your goal. Some things we do need to learn but why clog up your precious brain power with things you can look up on Google in seconds? Or watch a YouTube video tutorial on how to do.

This one is hard for you that are perfectionists and in constant state of “I just need to learn one more thing and then I will get started…” This is when you must realize that the best way to learn is to dive in and learn as you go. Your goal should be to start doing instead of accumulating more information.

A great action to take, especially if you are a procrastinator, is to create a challenge with a friend who will keep you accountable. If you don’t move forward on your goal you owe him or her a really nice $100 dinner every month that you are not doing what you say you will do. Of course, you can always hire a coach to keep you accountable too. 😉

If finding time is an issue for you then I recommend you analyze how you spend your time. Grab a sheet of paper and write down what you do in 15 minute increments. Track your entire day and do that for a few days, preferably a week.

You will see, in black and white, how you spend your time. Things like watching TV, surfing the internet without a specific purpose in mind, social media, not batching your activities, multi-tasking and always living in a reactive mode instead of proactive mode steals a lot of time.

Remember, you don’t need hours and hours each day, you just need to find small increments of time like 15-30 minutes when you work on moving your goals forward. You can also you shift things you may do on the weekends, like laundry and grocery shopping, to a time slot during the week instead freeing up time on the weekend for you to work on your goal in one big batch of time.

Talking about achieving your goals won’t help you achieve them. Creating an action plan and scheduling in time on your calendar to work on them, will.

This is your life we are talking about. You can either waste it wishing it would be different or you can take action and work on creating the kind of life you want to live and have. The choice is yours.

Rome wasn’t built overnight but brick by brick. What bricks are you going to lay this year? This month? This week? Today?
