Why are people my own age so boring? What?! You are calling me boring? Yes, I just did. And I’m going to say it again. Why are you so boring?
Why have you lost your childlike nature?
Why did you kill that playfulness inside of you?
Why are you so afraid of being goofy and making a fool out of yourself?
Why are you standing on the sidelines playing it safe?
Yes, you people my age and older. And now you are all wondering what age I am. Well, that depends on who you ask. According to my driver license I’m in the low 40’s. But I swear it must have the wrong number on it because if you asked me I would say I feel like I’m in my twenties, except a few mornings here and there when my body feels like it’s eighty.
The other day it snowed all day. First real snow day. I love snow so naturally I went to play in the snow. Made snow angels. Asked one of the young guys to take a picture of me. Who else was out playing in the snow? Kids and people in their 20’s. The took out their ski’s and snowboard’s, made jumps and had fun in the snow. They made a snowman. They played and enjoyed that first real snow. I was the only person playing in the snow over the age of 20-something.
Where were you? Now of course I know not all my readers had snow that day. I get that. But if it had snowed and you love snow like me, would you have gone out and made snow angels? Built a snowman? Played in the snow? On your own? Without the kids?
When it rains outside do you go outside dancing and singing in the rain? Even if the entire neighborhood is watching you?
If you ever have had flooding on your street, did you join all the kids that made it into a playground instead of just watching?
Do you go jump in that mud puddle that you really deep down inside want to jump into? Or do you hold back? I know you remember how much fun that was as a kid.
Do you go slide down a gravel pit like you would have done when you were a kid? Go climb a tree? (I bet you haven’t climbed a tree since you were a kid, have you?)
Why are you so scared being out playing like the kids? Why are you so scared of embarrassing yourself? Why are you holding back on doing something you want to do?
By the way, since many of you are holding back based on the worry about what others may think. Stop that. Your kids and teenagers will not say it, but they will think you are awesome. Your friends and neighbors. Who cares? They wish they had the guts to do it too, they just won’t say that. Instead, they will try to keep you on the sidelines so your actions won’t push them out of their comfort zone.
So people my age – stop being so boring! Stop playing it so safe! Stop being so adult and grown up. Get off that safe hamster wheel. Go out today and do something goofy. Sing in the office. Dance on the street. Be different. Don’t let fear of what others may think hold you back. Kids and people in their 20’s don’t care what others think. They live. They go for it. Be bold. Be audacious. Go have some fun. Laugh. Smile. Giggle.
Just go do it. Then come back here and comment on what you did. Or, comment on what you have always wanted to do but been too scared to do. I can’t wait to hear about all the fun things you finally went to go do. And for you readers that are in your 20’s, what do you think? And don’t think I have forgotten about you in your 30’s. You are somewhere in between. Some of you play, some of you don’t. So what do you think?

Snow angels are the best – I just don’t live anywhere that gets any snow! So I dance and splash in the rain. Warm, summer rain, when I can ditch the shoes, is the bestest! I also sing while grocery shopping. 🙂

I know…they are so much fun, but so is dancing and splashing around in the warm, summer rain. Oh, I like the singing while grocery shopping. That’s great. When people do that while I’m shopping it makes me smile. That kind of energy is contagious.

Thanks! I hope it inspired you to go something different and goofy today. It snowed here all day Friday, so after work I went to play in the snow.

I’m 49. I took my kids apple picking and guess who was climbing the trees to get the ones on top? It felt so good!

That’s awesome! Love it! I bet your kids loved it too and today at school they are bragging about their mom climbing a tree.
