Do you feel as if going to your day job is like a punishment?
Do you almost wish you rather had the flu when the alarm goes off than having to go to a job that sucks the soul out of you?
Do you feel trapped?
Do you wish you could make a living doing what you love to do?
Then I have a book for you to read called Day Job to Dream Job: Practical Steps for Turning Your Passion into a Full-Time Gig by Kary Oberbrunner.
As I was checking Twitter I came across a tweet with a book title that immediately grabbed my attention: Day Job to Dream Job. I knew I had to check it out because that’s what No More Hamster Wheel is ultimately about. Leaving a life that doesn’t feed our souls for one that does.
I immediately ordered the book and read it in one day. I’m going to sum up my opinion of this book in three words: Read This Book!
This book is not only well-written, well-researched but also incredible applicable to real life. Kary Oberbrunner talks about that now is the time to start plotting your escape from your day job to your dream job, not when you’re suddenly forced to.
The book contains a lot of practical advice and a step-by-step plan on how to go from day job to dream job. It also shows real life examples of people that have gone from a day job to their dream job so that you can see how they did it including how Kary left his corporate job to pursue his passion and dream job.
4 Key Points to Make You Think and Take Action
1. Now is the time. We live in an amazing era where starting a business doing what we love has never been easier. The capital investment is a fraction of what it was years ago and as Chris Guillebeau points out in his book The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future you can literally start almost any business with as little as $100. Today, you can even create a website for free (although I recommend you spend a few dollars a month going self hosted with a company like BlueHost so that you have control over your own content).
2. Think your job is secure? Think again. Studies show that by year 2020 (that’s less than 6 years from now) that 50% of current corporate positions will be converted to contract and freelance positions. Your W-2 with benefits will be a thing in the past. Why not start your own side business now so that you’re ready to escape your day job before you are forced to?
3. Leverage your knowledge and expertise. People are willing to pay you for your expertise. Don’t think you are an expert in something? Think again. Let’s say your passion is photography and you use a DSLR camera. For someone who has never used a DSLR camera to them you are an expert. Day Job to Dream Job shows you how to take that passion of yours and make it into a dream job that also pays.
4. Your day job is killing you. The statistics are shocking. 70% of American workers experience stress-related illnesses. There is a 33% increase in heart attacks on Monday mornings and a 25% increase in work-related injuries. Male suicide rates are highest on Sunday nights (sad escape that could have been prevented) and more people die at 9 AM on Monday mornings than any other day of the week. The list goes on but I think you are getting the picture.
I’m going to leave you with a quote from the book: “Why get paid to do something you don’t want to do? Sounds like “professional prostitution” to me.” Now go order the book and start changing your life. For a limited time you can order the hard copy for a discounted price plus get great bonuses like a work book by going to Kary Oberbrunner’s site.

It’s a great book Claire! You can always check with Kary on his site if they can ship to New Zealand but it’s available on Amazon as a Kindle as well. I’ve never been to New Zealand. Maybe I should find a way to hand deliver it to you 🙂 Not a bad excuse for a trip!
Camilla,
Well given that I have the same goal as you (reading 52 books this year) I’ll be adding this one to my read list. And I bought it through your link. I think our taste in books is very similar.
Thanks
