Routine. So easy to fall into. So comfortable. Nothing challenging about it. We know what to do and what to expect. A routine once established is like a habit. It’s easy. It becomes automatic. We don’t really have to think about it too much. Or, we think too much about it and the thought of change is too scary and we tell ourselves now is not the time, we will do it later.
What about routines that are good? Like an exercise routine? It’s still a routine and needs to be changed up in order for the body to get stronger, fitter and more flexible.
I say that again. Every routine, even a good one, needs to be challenged. Why? Because that’s how we grow. That’s how we become better at something. That’s how we expand our vision and start thinking outside the box.
The mind works the same way. If we don’t challenge it then it starts to stay dormant. We need to challenge it by reading an interesting book, learning a new language, playing chess, doing something we haven’t done before.
We need to push ourselves out of the comfort zone. Out of the habit that has become a routine, so comfortable, so safe. That’s the only way to grow, learn about yourself and expand your vision.
This holiday season I’m challenging you to change up one routine. One that you automatically do because well, you have never thought of why you are doing it or you have been too scared to bring it up with your family. Are you following the herd when it comes to buying tons of Christmas gifts even if your budget doesn’t allow it? Are you feeling the pressure to keep up with the holiday craze instead of changing it to be what you really want it to be about? Are you in a routine when it comes to holidays?
Start thinking about why you are doing certain things. Be brave enough to change one thing you have wanted to change but been too scared to. For many of you that comes to the amount of money you spend on gifts. It’s a routine that so many want to break. Be that person this year. Go for it and change it up. Challenge yourself with something new, something different and something that pushes you out of your comfort zone. You can do it!
So what is one routine you would love to change? What kind of challenge are you adding to your life?
