Great Things Take Time

July 4, 2017 by Camilla

“Great things take time” ~Unknown

I saw this great card in a bookstore and thought – what a great topic for a blog post!

We live in what I call “a microwave society” where we want everything now, not tomorrow, but right now. We want instant success. Instant wealth. Instant perfect body. Instant this and that. And of course we preferably want it without putting too much work in.

I believe this is much thanks to the internet and social media where it looks as if everyone’s life is perfect and where none of the reality is shared. We only see the end-result or what appears on the outside.

Sadly, too many, especially in the online world, is trying to sell us only the end-result and that you too can succeed overnight if you just buy their course, their book or their material. I don’t know about you but it drives me crazy!

Are there those that succeed building a 6-figure business in 6 months? Yes. But quite often it’s because they either worked a 100 hours a week and hit it so hard they didn’t know what was up and what was down, or because they had prior knowledge that took years to accumulate.

Let’s take a look at the game Angry Bird. Instant success. Well, the backstory to that is over 60 failed games over 8 years. It was an 8 year in the making ‘overnight’ success.

Let’s take a look at one of the most popular podcasts out there, Entrepreneur on Fire, that today makes hundreds of thousands of dollars a month. That was not the case from the get-go. It took time to build that up, with no to little revenue for well over a year. Plus John Lee Dumas hired a $1,000 per hour business coach to help him get to where he wanted to go faster.

Zappos? If you haven’t read the story behind that please do. Zappos was on the brink of shutting down so many times for years due to lack of funds, even after Tony Hsieh sold pretty much everything he owned to fund the company and secure other funding.

Tesla? At one point Elon Musk sold everything he owned to save the company and had to borrow money to pay rent.

We all know the story behind Harry Potter, Amazon and other now big names and how long they had to deal with rejection and not being profitable, taking years and even a decade to become the success we saw.

Pretty much anyone you see having succeeded doing what you want to do have a not so pretty story behind that. A story of hard work, frustrations, defeat, wins, failure, another win, more hard work, crap how will I pay the bills this month to let’s have real sushi tonight.

Can you speed up your path to success? Absolutely. Hire awesome coaches, mentor, join masterminds and surround yourself with people smarter than you. Ask others how they did it. Read books, take a course in marketing, influence, and sales.

That said, don’t let anyone ever tell you it’s easy or that what they have can make you a millionaire overnight or that their program is the only program that works. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Success takes time, hard work, knowledge, grit and determination to make it happen. It’s not a straight arrow. It’s a roller-coaster of so many ups and downs.

Plus remember, your situation may be completely different that someone else’s. It’s easier for a single person with few responsibilities to hustle pretty much non-stop than someone with a family and kids. It’s easier for someone who has the cash flow to hire the kind of help they need to go places faster than for someone who doesn’t. It’s easier for someone who has years of prior knowledge to package their knowledge into an online course to succeed faster than someone who is just starting out trying to figure out what they want to teach.

Put one foot in front of the other, seek out and hire the best to your ability, surround yourself with people smarter than you and that have done what you want to do, and believe in yourself.

Most of all, remember as you’re working on your dreams and goals that all great things take time.

If you felt this post was of value to you please share with others so they too can learn how to stop spinning and start living. I create these free trainings and blog posts for you. I appreciate you!

3 Ways to Stay Accountable

February 29, 2016 by Camilla

Why is it so hard to stay accountable to yourself? And are there tricks to help you?

Developing success habits, getting things done and staying dedicated isn’t always easy. It requires commitment. It requires that you know why you’re working hard on achieving something. And it helps to remember that every single person has to work on it. Even the highly successful.

Successful people like Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey and Fortune 100 executives that seem to have a magic touch, have so because they have a team of coaches and mentors keeping them accountable.

Which got me thinking. If highly successful people can’t keep themselves accountable without help, what does that tell us? It tells us we need to follow their lead.

3 Ways to Stay Accountable

3 Ways to Stay Accountable

ONE. Give up on this crazy idea that you can do it on your own. Get a team.

As noble as that sounds it used to take a village to raise a child. In today’s society we seem to have forgotten that we need others to help us, that we’re not born with all the knowledge we need in order to get to where we want to go. Ask for help! Hire a coach, get a mentor, read books, invest in your personal development and understand it’s a continual process. No one has it all figured out, not even Oprah!

TWO. Say no to things that doesn’t matter and start saying yes to you!

I should go work out. Okay, why aren’t you? Because I’m tired. Why are you tired? Because I went to bed late. Why did you go to bed late? Because I stayed up late and watched TV. Why did you stay up late watching TV? Because I don’t set boundaries and allow myself to get sucked in. Why don’t you set boundaries? I don’t know. So you’re telling me that some show on TV is more important than you?

See where I’m going with this? The root cause isn’t that you’re tired, it’s because you value some show on TV more than you value yourself. When you start looking at things in a different light you can see how you’re cheating yourself by saying yes to things that are holding you back vs. moving you forward.

Stop cheating yourself by using excuses. Figure out the real reason. Also, change your language. Here’s a great article by Jeff Haden on two powerful words that can change your life and help you achieve your goals better.

THREE. Pretend you’re being filmed.

I love this one. I learned it in Todd Henry’s Die Empty book. (affiliate link). Pretend someone is following you around with a video camera all day documenting your life. You only have this day and that is how others will view how you lived your life. You of course create a perfect day and get that recorded. But here’s the thing. Is that how you truly live your life? Or will that recording be dishonest based on how you live your life when nobody’s watching?

Pretend you’re being filmed every day. You are the director of your own movie!

Staying accountable to yourself is hard. No doubt about it, but hopefully these tips will help you on your journey. These are tips I use myself as keeping myself accountable is an ongoing process!

How to Get Work Done While Traveling

June 15, 2015 by Camilla

How do you effectively run your business while traveling? Well, that is something I’m still learning how to do.

There are many variables you deal with when you are on the road like finding reliable internet, trip delays, time zone changes and more.

How to Get Work Done While Traveling

I recently got back from a three week trip to Sweden to visit family. I knew I wanted to spend some major quality time while there but at the same time I had to get work done, answer emails from coaching clients and stay on top of things like social media and more.

I’m also going through an intense coaching program with Jaime Tardy, who is known for her ability to take people to the next level, but if you want to work with her and she accepts you as a client you need to hustle and put some serious time in!

Least to say I had a lot on my plate but I was determined to make it all happen.

So How Do You Get Everything Done While on the Road?

1. Learn beforehand to work from noisy places like coffee shops, airports and alike. Those may be your only access points to wifi when you travel. If you can’t work in noise, get a pair of Bose headphones (affiliate link). They will make your life a dream.

2. Get as much done before you leave on your trip. Before I left I wrote and scheduled a month’s worth of blog posts. I also wrote and scheduled all the emails that go out to my Get Stuff Done program participants.

3. Use automation tools like Buffer and schedule your social media posts ahead of time in bulk. That way you can just jump in and stay on top of things when you have internet access instead of worrying about what you should post about.

4. Follow the Parkinson’s Law. Schedule in short but hyper-focused work sessions so you can free up the rest of the day for fun and play. Make a list of must-do items that cannot wait and get them done! After all, you’re not across the globe or hanging out in a beautiful National Park to work all day.

5. Prioritize what is truly urgent and essential to keeping your business going so that when you have reliable internet access you can hammer things out and don’t waste it surfing Facebook.

6. Tell your clients you will be on the road and your response time may be longer than usual.

Lake Vattern Sweden - How to Get Work Done While Traveling

Obviously if you are traveling non-stop or living out of a van or suitcase like Natalie Sisson you can have more of a day-to-day schedule but you will still run into internet connection issues, time zone changes and cannot always get work done when you thought you would.

Learning how to work on the road effectively will be key. Practice going on shorter trips before you go on longer ones so you can learn what works and what doesn’t.

One of the best resources I have that has become my go-to is Natalie Sisson’s book The Suitcase Entrepreneur: Create freedom in business and adventure in life. (affiliate link) That book contains so much great information it’s a must read for anyone who wants to run a freedom business while traveling.

If you travel for work what tips do you have? If you don’t, got any questions that I may be able to answer? Please share in the comments.
